If a lamp or LED is out, the first step is to verify whether the light unit is receiving proper voltage when that aspect should be illuminated. The maintainer should inspect the lamp, LED module, socket, connector, and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
If the wrong color is displayed, the maintainer should check for incorrect lenses, damaged lenses, crossed wiring, shorts, or improper operation of the control relays or solid-state outputs that energize each color circuit.
Flashing aspect problems may involve a light that stays steady when it should flash, flashes when it should remain steady, or flashes at the wrong rate. The flasher unit, control circuitry, and wiring between the flasher and signal light must be checked.
Dim or intermittent lights are often caused by loose or corroded connections, poor power supply voltage, voltage drops, water intrusion, damaged wiring, or failing LED modules. These conditions must be corrected before the signal can be considered reliable.
If a signal does not respond when track occupancy changes or when an interlocking control is operated, the maintainer must inspect the control system. This may include track circuits, relays, fuses, circuit breakers, interlocking logic, wiring, and output circuits.
Multi-head signals should be troubleshot one head at a time. A problem may be isolated to one signal head, one lamp circuit, one LED module, or one section of the control wiring.
Wiring diagrams are essential because they show how power, control logic, relays, outputs, and field wiring are connected. Without the proper plans, it is easy to misidentify circuits or overlook the true source of the failure.
A good troubleshooting process begins with a visual inspection, followed by voltage, current, and continuity testing. The maintainer should isolate the fault by checking one section of the circuit at a time.
All troubleshooting must follow railroad safety procedures. Circuits should be de-energized when required, and testing must be performed only by qualified personnel using approved tools and procedures.
